京都サウンドスケーププロジェクトは世界に類のない規模の音響データベースです。
このデータベースは、旧平安京内にあたる京都市中心部すべての交差点をほぼ網羅する1,206箇所の音風景（サウンドスケープ）を収録しており、いわばひとつの街全体をまるごと音響資料としています。
本来、我が国の音風景（サウンドスケープ）はそれ自体が我が国固有の文化財産であることは言うまでもありませんが、我が国における音響資料の価値付けは極めて低いです。このデータベースはそのようなサウンドスケープ研究の現状を一気に世界水準に引き上げるものであり、かつ後世に伝える『音の文化財』として一級の価値を持つものです。
以下、このデータベースの具体的な意義を記します。
1. サウンドスケープ研究への貢献
都市の街路音響の全容をカバーするアーカイブは世界初のことであり、これだけでもサウンドスケープ研究では画期的なことです。このアーカイブは、現時点での有効性のみならず、100年以上経過した時には都市の生活を伝える貴重な歴史的資料にもなるでしょう。
2. 創作への貢献
音響資料を「閲覧」という形ではなく、著作権の制限のない「利用」に供することによって、アートとアーカイブの連携という新たな潮流を創出します。
3. 都市環境学への貢献
都市まるごとの音響ビッグデータの構築により、メディアアートの介入などを通して、都市環境問題への啓蒙などの貢献が期待されます。
4. 資料の価値創造
音響資料に対して学的関係諸領域のアノテーションが付与されたアーカイブのプロトタイプを製作することによって、音響のもつ新たな文化財的ポテンシャリティを創造し、資料価値を高めます。
About Our Project
The Kyoto Soundscape Project is an unparalleled sound database in the world.
This database contains soundscapes (soundscapes) of 1,206 intersections that nearly cover the entire central area of Kyoto City, which corresponds to the old Heian-kyo. In a sense, it turns an entire city into an acoustic resource.
It goes without saying that the soundscape of our country is itself a unique cultural property of our country, but the valuation of acoustic data in our country is extremely low. This database dramatically raises the current state of soundscape research to a world standard and holds first-class value as a “sound cultural property” to be passed on to future generations.
Below, I outline the specific significance of this database.

The archive covering the entire soundscape of an urban street is the first of its kind in the world, and even this alone is revolutionary in soundscape research. This archive will not only be effective at present but will also become a valuable historical document conveying urban life after more than 100 years. - Contribution to Creativity
By making acoustic materials available for “use” rather than just “viewing,” free of copyright restrictions, it creates a new trend in the collaboration between art and archives. - Contribution to Urban Environmental Studies
